Easyseat - Innovation
Watch this brief video about a device for the disabled, designed by a Japanese Engineer, KT Chun. IT is designed such as to help the elderly disabled person to move in / out of toilets / lifts and roll into pathways outside the house. This wheelchair is fully automated but with a difference. To be manufactured and sold money is needed. Therefore the idea is put up in kickstarter site to elicit funds. You can at least spread the news through FB or Twitter
Save the video if you want, as it might vanish soon if funding does not materialise!

Senior citizens, living below the poverty line, will now get for free assistive devices like hearing aids and wheelchairs under the government's Rs 477 crore scheme which is set to be rolled out next week. The proposed 'Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojna' will be launched at a camp in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district on March 25 by Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawarchand Gehlot and Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu.A similar camp will be organised on March 26 in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain district. "The aim of the scheme is to bring the older people from the economically weaker sections into active life and build an aged-friendly society by providing them with devices to maintain near normalcy in morbidity," said a senior official in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
The government has set a target of distributing assistive living devices among 2,000 identified beneficiaries for free in each camp, he added.
"Following this, the camps will be organised in two districts of each state for the whole year. The Minister, in December last year, had written to all the chief ministers to identify the beneficiaries in those districts," the official said.
The devices to be distributed among the beneficiaries will be of high quality and conform to the standards laid down by the Bureau of Indian Standards.
He said that to avail the facilities under the scheme, a beneficiary should be of at least 60 years and will have to be certified by competent authority as a person living below the poverty line.
According to the official, the department had suggested three names for the scheme out of which the Prime Minister's Office has given nod to 'Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojna'.
The scheme aims to address the disabilities like low vision, hearing impairment, loss of teeth and locomotor disability.
The beneficiaries will get walkers, crutches, wheelchairs, tripods, spectacles, hearing aids and dentures among others.
"The government wanted to roll out the scheme in January, but had to postpone it in view of the assembly elections in five states," he said.
There are 10.38 crore senior citizens in the country as per the Census of 2011 and 5.2 per cent of them suffer from some sort of old age-related disability.
"It is projected that the number of senior citizens will increase to around 173 million by 2026," the official added.

Teenage girl's adjustable walker boon for elderly, disabled - India.com
Title is misleading. Adjustable walker designed by a teenage girl for the elderly...
====================
New Delhi, Mar 17 (PTI) A 19-year-old has invented a special modified walker with adjustable legs to help the elderly and differently-abled persons climb up
and down the stairs with ease.New Delhi, Mar 17 (PTI) A 19-year-old has invented a special modified walker with adjustable legs to help the elderly and differently-abled persons climb up and down the stairs with ease.
Shalini Kumari, a resident of Patna, is one of the 14 persons including innovators, writers and artists who are currently living as guests of the President in the Rashtrapati Bhavan as part of a two-week In-Residence Programme.
Shalini said the idea came to her mind when she saw her grandfather struggle while climbing stairs as traditional walkers were not apt for walking on an uneven surface.
"It is really difficult and sometimes impossible for the elderly, differently-abled persons or those recuperating from lower limb problems to climb up or down the stairs using conventional four-leg walkers," she said.
Shalini observed that the four-leg walkers were not flexible enough to provide support for climbing stairs, and providing flexibility to them was the key.

"My grandfather enjoyed walking on the terrace, but found it difficult to walk up the stairs. It was then I decided to prepare a modified walker with adjustable legs," Shalini said.
Shalini sent her proposal to make modified adjustable walkers to the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), an autonomous body of the Department of Science and Technology set up to provide institutional support to innovators, and her idea was appreciated by officials who assured her all possible help in making her dream project a reality.
The walker with spring-loaded, self-locking front legs was finally prepared with the help of NIF, she said.
She has won a number of awards for her innovtion including IGNITE award of the National Innovation Foundation (NIF).

The modified walker, which costs nearly Rs 3,000, has an innovative self-locking mechanism through which front legs of walker can be raised while climbing up stairs and lowered while climbing down, Shalini said.
"It is very stable, light weight, adjustable to all sizes of stairs and can also be used while walking on inclined surface. This walker is useful for children, elderly people and specially abled persons," Shalini said.
An ergonomically designed product, the walker weighs four kg. It can be used regardless of a person's height and weight.

Golden Oak - A senior citizens home for Dementia
Golden Oak – A Senior Citizens
Home for Dementia care
Today I was happy to participate in the inauguration of a Senior
Citizens Home for patients suffering from Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. It
is the first of its kind in Telangana and AP as it exclusively devoted to
dementia care. It is a thirty bedded assisted living facility offering individualized
/ personalized care that includes: Diet plan, medical supervision, physiotherapy, frequent outings, interaction
with family members over Skype etc. Dormitory, single bed, twin sharing
accommodations (AC) are available. Families may leave their elderly for periods
of a month or three months or for longer terms like a whole year. This will be
useful as a respite for care givers or perhaps when you need to go abroad for
any reason.
Golden Oak is located in Malkaram Village in Shamshabad (RR District) some 40 KM from Secunderabad. Within
a km from here is also located Asha Jyothi Psychiatric Rehabilitation centre,
already functioning for several years. Both are units of reputed ASHA hospital
for psychiatry in Banjara Hills.
The whole facility was formally inaugurated by Dr Raghu Rami
Reddy; Various sections were inaugurated by other dignitaries, one of them – a multipurpose
lecture hall – by me, as well.
Dr K Chandra Sekhar, MD of Asha Hospital,(whom I know from
the initial days of ARDSI Hyderabad Deccan Chapter) welcomed all and gave an
overview of the project. It has twin objectives: 1.Assisted living and specialized
care for elderly with dementia who actually going through a second childhood . 2.
Respite care for family members / caregivers. The chief guest spelt out why
such a facility has become a necessity now, emphasizing that caring persons
with dementia is a divine service. Mr
Gopala Rao, who was instrumental in making this dream a reality, was
felicitated.
Dr Amulya Rajan gave a presentation on the need for respite
care in dementia. Caring for a dementia patient can be very exhausting; As far
as the DIL is concerned, it is taken for granted that it is her duty. Making
choices on behalf of such patients who are dependent and vulnerable is fraught
with problems. Ms Saadiya Huzurk made a presentation on Person centered care.
Essentially she clarified that each AD patient is unique and no single formula
will work. Therefore changes in approach and delivery of care needed. There are
always surprises and shocks to face and handle.
Mr Sasidharan, GM, Asha Hospital proposed a vote of thanks.
We were treated to scrumptious lunch. We had plenty of time to explore all
sections of the facility, Services will start by March.
Charges for various offerings are being worked out. I liked
the specialized comfortable furniture with decor, self explaining signs on shelves
/ storage, senior friendly fixtures in toilets, spacious TV hall, hygenic
Dining Hall etc.
